It involves using a <a title=\"z-table\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/cr1n4n6xsz8og9g\/Statistical%20Table%20Normal%20z2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">z-table<\/a>, but so many tools are available to make the work easier &#8211; even some accessible from a smart phone with a web browser. More on that another time.<\/p>\n<p>For those with access to a spreadsheet: Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc, Kingsoft Office, Gnumeric and Google Sheets offer a wealth of statistical tools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/kt5krcwo7vxa8ns\/FisherExample.xls\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to download a spreadsheet<\/a> that solves the problem on page 319 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/h1l9d0z7vlcdpdm\/Online_Statistics_Education%20Lane2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Lane textbook<\/a> and Exercise 2 on page 324 of Lane.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not have spreadsheet software, try looking with <a href=\"https:\/\/onedrive.live.com\/redir?resid=9CD8EA0D53468011!219&amp;authkey=!AKQ6KiQ8RW-CJ08&amp;ithint=file%2c.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\">Excel Online<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1-qWQE-jq5hFzOiIzOASGQy5EPdf1XB9mAmViUIB8LQ0\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">Google Sheets<\/a>. (Note: you will need either a free Microsoft (Excel) or Gmail (Google) account to make a copy and edit the file, otherwise you can only view.)<\/p>\n<p>The main functions are:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FISHER<\/strong><\/em><strong>(r value)<\/strong>, which transforms the correlation coefficient into a normal variable<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NORMSDIST(Z-value)<\/strong><\/em>, which returns the cumulative distribution for the standard normal distribution with mean = 0 and standard deviation = 1<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NORMDIST(X-value, Mean, Std.Dev,1)<\/strong><\/em>, which returns the cumulative distribution for the normal distribution with mean = <em>Mean<\/em> and standard deviation = <em>Std.Dev.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Computers make the mechanics of statistics easy, so we can focus on understanding, analysis and interpretation!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A student asked how to work a problem with the sample distribution of Pearson&#8217;s r using a calculator alone.
